Scarlett fever: that Tom Waits album update in full

By Jude Rogers

Bewitching Bill Murray in a pink wig, baring her ivory arse in front of Keira Knightley's ribcage on the front of Vanity Fair, talking about her "puppies": you'd be forgiven for thinking that Scarlett Johansson's done it all. But no! That Tom Waits covers album story from a while back has actually come true. The record comes out on May 20 in America, and it features Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, David Sitek from TV On The Radio, and presumably our Scarlett gargling into a whisky bottle full of gravel to get the authentic Tom graagh.

But will it be any good? Scarlett's comments on the matter - “God only knows how many of my talented friends would kill for this chance!" - sound, well, buck-passing. And we all know what happens when the actor-to-singer transition goes horribly wrong:

But leaving Stefan Dennis aside for a moment (I know, I know, it's tough to) put on those Simon Cowell-approved high-waisted slacks, and judge these two examples of Scarlett's unique sound for yourself. The first comes from her performance with The Jesus And Mary Chain at Coachella...

...and the second from her Chrissie Hynde moment in Lost In Translation. The best appraisals get a cream cracker.
