Lykke Li
Saccharine Swedish pop is a little bit like Pringles, tacky dinner party show Come Dine With Me and fancy, inappropriate pants – we just can't get enough of them! Lykke Li is the latest spell-binding Scandie should-be-superstar who's making our hearts beat that Little Bit faster. Here's just a few of the numerous reasons that you should love 21 year old 'lectro soul lass Lykke.
1. Because we're still not sure how to pronounce her name. The record label says it's "Licky Lee", but we fancy it might be just the same as saying 'Likely' or even the ruder 'Licker Lay'. Or howsabout 'Like A Lie'? Who cares! They're all fun!
2. Because of this acoustic Stockholm street corner version...
of the her sublime track Little Bit...
...which is possibly even better than the plugged-in original. Our current best bits are the tiny piano and the bells round Lykke's neck – which have just taken over from our initial faves, her great lipstick and top knot combo.
Here's the lowdown from Lykke's blog re: what the bloke at the window is shouting at them about in the first vieo: "We stood on a street in Södermalm and had a nice man yelling out us at the same time. At first he told us to be quiet but then we ended up throwing pennies at us. Thats how I like to live...Be the underdog and struggle myself up and then have people throwing pennies at me." Bless.
3. Because of this all-star Swedish popstar spectacular. This stripped down version of her raucous girl-groupy track I'm Good, I'm Gone features two Shout Out Louds, a Concrete and a whole Robyn, as well as featuring Lykke gamely riding the handclaps. And check out those eyelashes!
4. She's had the kind of bonkers, Trustafarian upbringing that makes us nowt but very, very jealous. "I lived five years in Portugal and then spent winters in Nepal or India. I had a very free upbringing, running around naked," Lykke told Time Out. "I was going to parties in India when I was ten. My brother would fall asleep by the speakers. We went to Morocco too and met a woman who turned out to be a prostitute. Because all the hotels were booked, we ended up staying in her house." Take us with you next time, eh, Lykke?
5. Apparently Lykke Li (her real name is Lykke Zahrisson) is Chinese for maybe. Which reminds us, Happy Chinese New Year!
