Best in show

By Lauren Cochrane

From the shiny coats to crazy hairdos, there's few things better than dog shows on a Sunday afternoon and that's only when you're looking at the handlers. To get the full experience, have a quick rewatch of Crufts 2008 (out this week on DVD). As you can see, it was edge of the seat stuff – with dog eat dog (sorry) competition, cameos by auspicious celebrities like Neil Morrissey and teams named Araki Fabulous Willy. A Giant Schnauzer with the rather grand title Jafrak Philippe Olivier won top dog as Best In Show (that's him over there), but you knew that already.

Anyway, it turns out that we're not the only ones obsessed with dog shows. Acclaimed photographer Bruce Weber (a well-known dog lover) based one of his books on a Newfoundland breeder found at a dog show. And artist Jo Longhurst devoted a recent project to snapping her greyhound in the cold manner of the dog show judge. The erudite New York Times even recently covered them, which made us feel very clever indeed. To feel less clever, look to YouTube. Here are our favourite dog show-related clips. You'll be wagging your tail in no time.

Best In Show

Just two of the delightful people featured in Christopher Guest's 2000 dog show reality spoof, Best In Show, Leslie Ward Cabot and Sherri Ann Cabot discuss their "pushing all my buttons" relationship despite at least 40 years age difference. "We have so much in common," coos Sherri Ann, as their poodle wanders across the screen. "We both love… soup."

Westminster

The American equivalent of Crufts, fans of Best In Show will be forgiven for thinking this footage of handlers at Westminster is just bits of the film they missed. Cue poodles that take a day to get their bouffanted look just so and dogs referred to as "my little overachiever".

Pluto

Even a world-famous pooch can be intimidated in the rarefied environment of the dog show, as this clip from a 1939 Disney cartoon attests. Everyone involved wear their noses in the air – dogs and humans alike. Pluto, on the other paw, bounds out of what appears to be Mickey Mouse's sidecar, is dubbed "riff raff" by the dog show doorman and hilarity ensues.

My Little Pony

Sometimes dog shows don't even need to happen outside of your bedroom – especially if the contestants (and, indeed, judges) are around three inches tall and plastic. Taking place in Ponyville, pink and blue ponies present the event, and dogs called Einstein teach homeless kids chemistry. If only the real world was just a little more like Ponyville.

Triumph the insult comic dog

Starring on The Conan O'Brien Show in the US, Triumph has a cult following and even presented an award with Dave Grohl at the Billboard Music Awards. Here, he takes a trip to Westminster, and gives the dog's eye view. Talking through the previous winners of the dog show, "it's not about talent, it's about who you humped", apparently.

Grease

An inevitable trick-related clip, this one will give any Grease purist chills (they're multiplying). A You're The One That I Want routine between a wannabe Sandy and Danny the golden retriever, John Travolta has some stiff competition. This dog knows all the moves, including stepping out side-by-side with Sandy and going backwards for the "feeeel your way" part of the song.

We are sticky-taping the last few pieces of the comments system together right now. You should be able to have your say in no time at all - thanks for being a patient type and check back in the next couple of days.
