Rise in crimes by girls: the fallout

By Rebecca Nicholson

Yesterday's big shocka scandal news centred around the whopping 25 per cent rise in crimes committed by women, so it follows that today is all about the whys.

The Times blames "ladette culture and underage drinking" while acknowledging that the rise (women are now responsible for an average of 45 violent attacks every single day) could reflect the fact that "society is now taking offending by girls more seriously than it did in the past."

Today's Metro also lays the blame at the door of underage drinking but reveals that "most of the violent offences recorded were minor fights between girls, sometimes in school playgrounds."

The good old Mail says that it's "a female crimewave" before quoting a police officer, who says "In the past we haven't seen girls significantly being involved in crime. However, recently we have seen stealing things like cosmetics which are very easy to take." Teenage girls pinching eyeliner from Boots! Imagine!

Despite the doom-and-gloom headlines, it looks as if this rise is primarily down to a more hardline approach to minor crimes committed by women rather than a sign of the binge-drinking apocalypse, but what say you - are we seeing more and more naughty girl behaviour?

Is this new news?

There has always been girls that shoplift, girls that are intimidating, girls drink and smoke and swear in their school uniforms...why is this coming out now?
I can't say I've noticed a rise in it tbh, if anything I've seen a reduction being in London - it's much worse in towns.
