New Film Friday: May 16

By Rebecca Nicholson

Smart People (15)

It's got a pretty darn amazing cast - SJP, Ellen Page, Dennis Quaid and Thomas Haden Church - but with Page playing a Republican and SJP playing a doc, something ain't gelling.

Guardian 3/5: "What a shame it never quite gives into its juicy streak of misanthropy."

Empire 2/5: "Strong performances and a few laughs, but the story feels lazy next to superior efforts recently in the same genre."

Times 2/5: "Although the individual elements are promising – a solid cast and a screenplay by the acclaimed novelist Mark Poirier – the story feels too contrived to engage."

Charlie Bartlett (15)

A poor little white rich boy rises up against his dastardly private school. Finally, someone is telling this story.

Guardian 2/5: "The promising themes peter out as the film loses direction, though, and Bartlett is neither sympathetic enough to root for nor dumb enough to laugh at."

Total Film 2/5: "Starting as a satire on therapy culture, John Poll’s comedy loses its footing early on and ends up blaming grown-ups for everything."

Empire 3/5:"After a strong start, the story ceases to challenge itself and its characters, offering easy options and a Prozac-soft finish."

Shutter (15)

Look at little Pacey, all grown up enough to star in his very own eastern horror remake (heaven knows there are enough to go around). This time, it's not tapes or mobile phones to be feared, but cameras. Woooo.

Times 2/5: "The plot is as creaky as the couple’s sinister apartment block."

Empire 2/5: "Workmanlike at best; derivative, predictable and slightly dull at worst."

Guardian 3/5: "It doesn't help that Joshua Jackson is impossible to like here and the plot relies on clunky expository dialogue."

Joshua Jackson

I've always found it hard to like him, he's constantly smug -it's bloody irritating.
That's a pretty poor set of films if the quotes are anything to go by :/ maybe I'll skip the cinema this week
