Wii Fit's dangerous side

By Susanna Forrest

Is your Wii Fit a boon or a bust for the economy? Lady-friendly insurers Sheila's Wheels have interviewed 1,000 women, done some totting up and extrapolating and discovered that 20,000,000 British women will admit to working out in the privacy of their own living room, either with a fancy gadget like the Wii Fit or with one of those many G-list celeb exercise videos by Jade Goody, Natalie Cassidy et al, or just going hell for leather freestyle. Given the cost of gym membership and the school showers atmosphere of some of those places it's hardly surprising.

Among the many heartening stats – did you know that 58 per cent of British women wig out and dance round the living room? – is the, well, not so surprising fact that there's a downside to housercise. Furniture, pets, nick-nacks and women get damaged:

"Nearly a fifth of women (18 per cent) who exercise indoors have been involved in accidents while working-out over the last year. The most common accidents included bumping into furniture (30 per cent) and pulling a muscle (19 per cent) but an alarming few have been involved in more unusual and serious mishaps from tripping over a pet (18 per cent) to banging their heads (13 per cent)."

Although the insurance company doesn't count time spent off work with concussion in their sums, they do calculate that home exercise causes £20,155,080 worth of damage to household goods nationwide, although if all these TVs, vases and chihuauas have to be replaced, you could see that as a nice economic spur – the more we aerobercise, the more we buy.

The Lipster's Rebecca raved about Wii Fit but I'm sticking to watching Mad Lizzie on YouTube – not that I do the exercises, because I'd break my back, but so I can build my upper arms up backcombing to achieve her signature 80s look and work out my stomach laughing myself to appendicitis. Here she takes on Bucks Fizz in a kind of celebricise deathmatch – no way our Liz is going to let those cynical girls spoil her energy flow. Enjoy!

Oh my God, I love Mad Lizzie

Did you know, Susanna, that the original TV=AM team re going to be presenting BBC London's morning radio show? Mad Lizzie and everything. Not sure how that'll translate into audio, but hey-ho.
