New Karen O sounds: Native Korean Rock

By Rebecca Nicholson

Karen O solo project Native Korean Rock Yeah Yeah Yeahs are still teasing us via blog posts with the promise of a kitten-themed new album, but until that's finished, we can make do with some new Karen O solo sounds. She's been quietly beavering away at her bedroom project, Native Korean Rock, for the past two years, and just posted four songs on MySpace.

The tracks – OOO, Visits, Rapt and Indian Summer – are lo-fi, hissy and remarkably lovely. In fact, they're in a similar vein to the Squeak-E Clean Adidas track, Hello Tomorrow, if it had been recorded on a Fisher Price tape recorder. (The lyrics are nicely barbed too - see Rapt's "On goes the switch, love is soft, love's a fucking bitch.")

There's a Native Korean Rock show advertised on July 21, but sadly, it is in Brooklyn, and that is quite far. If you are an American and dwell in that region, please send us a report. We will return the favour with violent jealousy.
