Sci-fi, Retirement, The Wire: It's Mike Skinner Day
What with The Streets putting out fourth album everything is borrowed next month (his lower case, not ours), a glut of good Mike Skinner interviews have emerged today. And we learned about the new album, the one after that, drugs, The Wire and Melvyn Bragg.
1.He's decided against singing about being off his face on nasty drugs, a la Pranging Out: "I realised shortly afterwards that people don't want to know that shit." (Guardian)
2.Album number five - whoa there Nelly - sounds space-age. "It is going to be quite futuristic, and sci-fi. I love the way that sci-fi always questions society. I want to use cold, hard synthesizers; I’m definitely going down a Kraftwerk route." (The Quietus)
3.He's going to be on the South Bank Show. (Guardian)
4.He will do a film after the next, final album. "But I want to do it all on my own, not seek funding from anywhere else, because I'd rather it didn't end up being the by-committee type thing you get in the film industry." (Pitchfork)
5.But he's not actually retiring from music. "I cant really do anything else. It’s either this or back to Burger King." (The Quietus)
6.He wants his albums to be "like seasons one to five of The Wire." (Guardian)
So there you have it. Here's The Escapist:
Is it just me, or the hangover, or is he looking a bit pash-tastic in that photo? Do you like his tight sweater, etc?
I once saw him in the flesh, close-up, and he is a very, very handsome man. Ladies were swooning left right and centre. Lots nicer than in pictures too.
But is he not a pocket person? I venture he is rather wee in superhuman close-up.
